Materials

Simple supplies, natural finish.

The Grimm's-style look comes from transparent color, visible wood grain, wool textures, and soft imperfect felt pieces.

Supply Basket

  • Unfinished wooden peg dolls
  • Wool felt or wool-blend felt sheets
  • Wool roving for hair, beards, scarves, and soft trim
  • Acorn caps, tiny dried flowers, leaves, lace, and ribbon
  • Tacky glue or wood glue
  • Small scissors and paper for templates
  • 220 and 320 grit sanding sponges
  • Transparent watercolor or toy-safe wood dye
  • Beeswax wood polish or food-safe wood finish
  • Soft cloth for buffing
  • Optional adult-only hot glue gun
  • Optional adult-only felting needle

Follow along

Make one little figure at a time.

Children can choose colors, pass materials, paint transparent color, press wool in place, and name each doll. Adults handle tiny cutting, hot glue, sealing, and felting needles.

Step 1

Sand, stain, and seal.

  1. Smooth: use 220 grit only on rough spots, then 320 grit lightly over the whole peg.
  2. Color: brush on diluted watercolor or toy-safe transparent wood dye so the grain remains visible.
  3. Dry: let the wood dry fully. Watercolor can raise the grain slightly.
  4. Finish: buff with beeswax polish or a food-safe wood finish. Adults should handle oil-based finishes.

Step 2

Cut felt clothing with paper templates.

Cape

Cut a half-circle. Wrap it around the shoulders and glue at the front.

Cloak

Cut a small rectangle. Wrap around the body and glue the overlap in back.

Leaf collar

Cut a little circle, add a center slit, then snip points around the edge.

Hat

Cut a triangle, roll into a cone, glue the seam, and trim the bottom.

Wings

Cut a heart or two teardrops and glue to the back.

Pattern

Fit paper first, then trace the finished paper shape onto felt.

Step 3

Add wool roving and acorn caps.

  1. Pull: gently pull off a tiny piece of roving instead of cutting it.
  2. Place: use roving for hair, beards, scarves, cuffs, or soft winter trim.
  3. Glue: add a tiny dot of tacky glue, press the wool into place, and let it dry.
  4. Acorn child: tuck roving under the acorn cap, then glue the cap down so it traps the wool edge.
  5. Repair: remove a loose acorn cap, scrape old glue, re-glue with wood glue or adult-applied hot glue, and dry upright.

Step 4

Name the dolls and bring them into the rhythm.

Finished dolls can live on the seasonal table, beside the week's story, near the bread bowl, or in the nature basket. The dolls become small anchors for story, song, handwork, and imaginative play.
